What is a Pilot Station? A Pilot is someone who hops onto a Pilot Boat with their Coxswain and goes out across the water to meet a Ship. The Pilot embarks the Ship and expertly guides it across the water into the Dock safely, and the Coxswain drive their Pilot boat back to the station. There is a treacherous reef here called Hebe Reef - where many Ships have been wrecked across history. The ‘Pilot Station’ is where the Pilots, Coxswain and their boat are located and launch from.

Low Head Pilot Station is the oldest and longest active Pilot Station in Australia, dating back to 1805 and is still active today. Discover the history of Low Head Pilot Station at the maritime museum, stay with us and become part of its story.
